Length Check- Just so we're clear

Share    As I've mentioned before; I've been natural for three years.  When I started my healthy hair journey, I had several hair inspirations that I used to maintain motivation for my own hair.

Okay, so is this kinda goofy?  Lol, but after I charted my average growth rate per month ( 0.25"-0.50"), I made an approximation as to how many months it would take for me to reach different hair goals.  My unstretched hair needed to drape over my bra strap by 2012 or else, wahala dey o!

Year 3 Blow Dried

Somewhere during the journey, hitting hair goals fell by the way side, and stopped being my main focus. I still plan to ultimately reach my hair goal, but I think there is a maturation naturals go through.

Year 3 Blow Dried

A lot of us begin it obsessed with acquiring knowledge about our hair, fervently researching and absorbing everything we discover.  We spout off natural hair tenets, and even whip out rulers and measuring tapes, that meticulously document every inch of newly grown hair.  *Hangs head* guilty as charged.  But, as we progress, our routines become easier, even relaxed.

Personally, I'm at the tail end of this phase.  I wonder what comes next.

The Technique
My dry hair was plaited into 12 fat braids all over my head.  I misted each section with water, and then I mixed a small amount of coconut oil and alternated between Aphogee's Pro-Vitamin Leave -In Conditioner or Neutrogena's Triple Moisture Silk Touch Leave-In Cream.  The creams as well as the coconut oil, were used interchangeably, as heat protectants.  By now, you guys know how anti combs I am, and in order to stretch out my hair, I used the tension method ( combless blow drying).
My hair was held taut, away from my head, and the blow dryer was held over each section, until my hair was stretched out.
Tip: I blow dry the entire length of my hair, on the coolest setting.  I also shield the ends of my hair with my fingers as I work through each portion.  The cool setting drastically decreases any chances for heat damage; and since the ends of our hair are the oldest parts, I'm careful to protect them from excessive harsh manipulation.

I still occasionally whip out my ruler.

  2. I know I haven't done a post on exercise or a healthy diet yet, but they are the main things to will lead to good hair growth. Everything else is really just good maintenance.

  3. You have officially put me to shame. You hair grew more in two years than mine probably ever will. I've been eyeing the Triple moisture leave in. How often do you use it?

    1. Lol, aww, it'll get there. Eye on the prize. I initially bought the leave in to use frequently, but I haven't ever really reached for it until the blow dry, which was the first time. I've only blowdried once, as well.

  4. I love greasy things. I really believe that I won't feel "satiated" with a "healthy diet", also I dont' want to loose weight. (actually i would like to gain weight because I've lost so much weight due to stress). Do you think there is somewhere for me, a good deal? :/

    1. Hi Afro Fly! I LOVE cookie dough ice cream and carrot cake- my two vices :( But, I limit eating them to once a week/month. Eating healthy doesn't have to mean losing weight or losing flavor in your meals. It's about finding a smart balance. I definitely think there is a plan out there for you, but you will have to experiment to see what works and what doesn't. Have you ever thought about substituting something healthier for the greasy stuff? Or maybe portion control?

    1. Lol hair porn makes my heart go a-flutter. Chei! I'm so lazy w my hair now too.

SMH @ converting folks. I used to get UPSET when people refused to listen. Finally, I realized that when they were ready to get the lesson, they would.

It's that whole not making a horse drink thing.

  6. Your hair grew a lot in 3 years. You are right Maintenance helps. Without it, you would definitely have lost your hair.

I am even "gladder" to see that this is 4c-ish hair. The type that a lot of folks claims won't grow. You just proved a lot of folks wrong.

Hoping you'll be in Nigeria one day for NITC

    1. Tell me about it. I never really bought into that mess though. People underestimate the value of what we are exposed to when we are young and how it influences us when we are older.

It's funny because if I were to have a complex growing my hair, it would have come AFTER I went natural and read/heard all the 4b/c lamentations everywhere about how difficult it supposedly was to maintain.

  9. How do you retain so much length? Don't you experience SSK? How do you combat them and tangles? It seems like every time I am detangling my hair, I hear a "snap" and a "pop" here and then I tense up. :(

    1. Oh yes, I def get SSKs. Coily hair will get them. I've just stopped stressing over them.

Finger detangling! They allow you to sense those snags in your hair early enough to prevent the snaps and pops.

I finger detangled exclusively for the first two years of my journey. It can be time consuming, and now that my hair is much longer, I have to use a brush. Check out my Labor of Love post. I outline my regimen there. :-)

  10. Hi, my name is Ugochi and I just want to tell you that you truly inspire me on my natural hair journey. i must confess that you truly do have a beautiful hair and I am encouraged to actually do the BC. I just moved to Canada and I must say that the weather here is dry as heck, so please I just want to know how can I tackle dry scalp and hair? What should I look for in a conditioner (both leave-in and wash out)? what should I look for in a shampoo? What was your experience like when you went natural? Were you a product junkie? I don't mean to bombard you with questions, I am seriously doing my research on natural hair and trying to find what will work for me without being a product junkie. Once again thanks for your video, you truly inspire me as a Nigerian and an Igbo girl. Keep up the good work. Look forward to hearing from you.

    1. Hi Ugo!

Thank you so much for stopping by. This blog has just been here, dey collect dust and here you are ^_^. Your words mean the absolute most dearie.

I was a bit of a product junkie when I first started because it was fun trying out new things, but also because I really was trying to understand what my hair liked.

So, since it's getting colder, I'm actually contemplating flat ironing my hair for real for real in two weeks O_O. Yep, it's prob counter intuitive, but meh lol. Now for your hair, I recommend you always go for conditioners that have water or aloe vera listed at the top of the ingredients. I still love Aussie Moist and Giovanni. Trader Joes Nourish Spa is also excellent. For your leave in, try Giovanni's leave in treatment, then layer up on those butters girl! I recommend castor oil and whipped shea butter (it's easier to distribute through your hair and it still protects from moisture loss).

For shampoos, I like Giovanni's tea tree and African Pride's Shea Butter Miracle ( it's in my latest video).

I hope this helps ya a little babes. But let me know if you need more info :-)
