Styling for Retention- Protective Styles

We've hit the last installment of the Haircare Crash Course series folks!  Ehn, yes I know- FINALLY, right??

Yeah...

Well, for this concluding episode, I've decided to limit the written words, and instead, flood you guys with pictures of some protective styles that I've worn over the years.  Plus, I think pictures are always fun.

Oh, but first, perhaps I should at least define what a protective style is.

Protective styles refer to hairstyles that allow you to keep your hair away or "protected" for an amount of time.  Because your hair is locked into a set style for days, weeks, or months at a time, the hair is allowed to grow uninhibited, and better length retention can be achieved.

It's about allowing your hair to rest from constant manipulation that your hair, if it were alive, would probably cower from- detangling, combing/brushing, heat use, harsh weather, etc.

I move in and out of protective styles, mostly whenever the weather is too cold, or if I'm in a new environment, and I'm still becoming acclimated to my surroundings that there's no time to deal with hair.

So, if your hair ever starts to feel as if it's beginning to consume your entire life and you just need a break, explore new protective styles.

Cool?

Off we go!

In a few recent posts, I mentioned going into protective styling soon.  Currently, I'm rocking 15 braids.  They're not any thing fancy, I'm afraid.  But they are moisturized, trimmed, and put away.
I'm happy.
:-)
Are you considering protective styling for the winter?

    1. Lol chile! Lol, I thought I discovered something new when I introduced that second cap. Lol.

Now, if I want it to be uber uber uber flat, I cowash my braids and then don the wig caps. Wet to dampened hair is incredibly malleable.

  4. I'm Nigerian (Igbo) too! I was born there and am a senior in High School. I have never seen anyone with my "hair type" with such long beautiful healthy hair. How long have you been natural? I have been natural for less than a year now. Its hard because the kids in my school mostly the black ones call me nappy headed and laugh at me. My hair is down to my neck but I have some major shrinkage! But ne ways girl please tell me how long you've been natural and if it was hard for you at first? Abego!

    1. Aww, thank you for stopping by babes. I've been natural for four years now. My fourth anniversary was in September.

I commend you for embracing your hair at your age. You're decades ahead of your classmates, so even though their ignorance might seem to be overwhelming, know that you are on the right path, doing the right thing.

My natural hair wasn't exactly hard for me, to master, just different. Detangling and single strand knots suck, but that's it, as far as challenges go.

      Hang in there boo! :-)

  7. I find that my hair suffers a lot of breakage in braids, and I don't like to wearing wigs. How can I combat this problem?

    1. If your hair is breaking in braids, it may be due to dryness either from your hair or from the braiding hair you're using.

Combating it is all about moisture and sealing in the moisture. There are braid sprays in the stores you can purchase and I'd suggest moisturizing twice a day. Then seal with a butter once you're done.
